YEREVAN, April 17. /ARKA/. Armenian Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan signed a decree on Tuesday firing Suren Zolyan, head of Yerevan State Linguistic University.
According to the information available on the ministry’s website, before dismissing Zolyan, Ashotyan reprimanded him two times – on April 6 and April 17.
The conflict between the minister and the head of the university broke out after the latter, ignoring Ashotyan’s instruction not to leave the country at a period between March 19 and 23, traveled to Brussels for a session of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
On April 6, the minister issued the first strong reprimand followed by inspections in the university. The inspections found inaccuracies in the internal normative acts approved by Zolyan.
The ministry also accuses the university of issuing diplomas for specialty that doesn’t exist – English and Country Studies.
The university’s staff thinks the minister has a right to impose disciplinary punishment only on his subordinates and public servants, and the head of the university is neither his subordinate nor a public servant. -0-
