YEREVAN, March 18. /ARKA/. Getting pets chipped in Yerevan should be free of charge, Nare Aramyan, the Armenian representative of the Pro Paws charity organization, told a news conference today.

At the beginning of the year, Armenian media reports said some of residents of Yerevan were notified in written form that they were to pay 5 thousand drams (about $ 10.2) tax per year for each pet they had.

Failure to pay the tax was said to result in administrative liability. In response to the angry citizens, Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan said the tax for keeping pets can be canceled if Yerevan residents agree to register their pets by getting them chipped and have them vaccinated once a year.

Under the current law on pets, each Yerevan district has the right to levy its own tax on  a pet, which ranged  from zero drams to 5,000 drams.

According to Aramyan, not only pets but also stray dogs will be chipped and it will not have any impact on their numbers. She argued that poor families, senior citizens and some other categories of citizens should be offered incentives for having their pets chipped.

She said a newly created non-profit organization called "Center for the neutralization of stray animals" will deal with the registration, chipping and identification of pets , as well as with the sterilization of stray dogs.

Earlier, the Yerevan Zoo promised to assist the Center in the sterilization of stray dogs.  Studies show that the  number of stray dogs in the capital ranges from 15 to 20 thousand. This year, from 4,500 out of 6000 female stray dogs are  be sterilized. -0-
