YEREVAN, September 30. /ARKA/. Russia’s ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin and UNICEF Representative Tanja Radocaj signed an agreement today on cooperation in the framework of the first program to improve neonatal services in Armenia. The Russian-funded program with a budget of $600 thousand is designed for 2017-2019.

"The main goal of the program is to reduce child mortality rate by improving the quality of services. The program is composed of several components, the first of which is the creation of a total of 30 neonatal intensive care departments, which will fully satisfy the needs of Armenia,' Volynkin said.

According to him, within the framework of the program Armenian specialists will get acquainted with new approaches and technologies used by Russian medical centers. Also a group of Russian experts will visit Armenia to share experience.

"Another component of the program is improving the skills of medical staff. The training courses will involve some 400 health professionals from 30 maternity homes in Armenia", said Volynkin.

Radocaj, in turn, noted that though Armenia has made great strides in reducing child mortality, there is still work to be done here.

The infant mortality rate in Armenia in 2015 was 7.8 per one thousand. According to the ministry of health, in 1990 it was 18.9, decreasing by 57% in 2014 to 8.7. -0-
