YEREVAN, December 17. /ARKA/. Sanitek Armenia, the branch of Sanitek International Group –a multinational waste management company headquartered in Lebanon, said it will file a lawsuit against Armenia with international court to demand the return of its multimillion investments.

In response to the request of the Novosti-Armenia news agency, the Yerevan mayor's office said they do not take these statements seriously and regarded them in the political context.

Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan had repeatedly and publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the ineffective work of Sanitek, emphasizing that Yerevan residents would  no longer tolerate its poor performance.

In the spring of 2019, Sanitek was twice fined by the Municipality for failing to fulfill its contractual obligations in the amount of 13 million drams (more than $26,800) and 26 million drams ($54,100).
Sanitek was chosen by the previous administration of the Yerevan Municipality to handle sanitary cleaning and waste recycling of the capital city and was a monopolist in this business.

Later, Sanitek Armenia  issued a statement about financial difficulties, which it said were caused by "unreasonable and disproportionate sanctions and fines imposed by the mayor's office." The company claimed that as a result of financial pressure, more than 300 million drams (about 630 thousand US dollars) were withheld from the amounts that were to be paid to the company.

On December 16, 2020, Sanitek Armenia  again circulated a statement blaming the capital's mayor's office for the situation.

“For almost two years now, the law enforcement system of Armenia, represented by the investigative bodies, the prosecutor’s office and the courts, has clearly been following the instructions of the executive power, illegally carrying out persecutions against the Sanitek group of companies and its foreign investors,' it said.

In response to ARKA news agency's request for comments, the press secretary of the mayor's office Hakob Karapetyan noted that although the company's new statement formally may be perceived as news, in fact, it does not contain absolutely any new information.

According to him, the company had made similar statements and threats to the mayor's office during the period of the “garbage crisis” in the spring and summer of 2019, threatening to appeal to the International Arbitration after the contract with it was terminated.

"By and large, the text and wording of the statement implicate it was made on the basis of political expediency," concluded Karapetyan. - 0--
