YEREVAN, April 17. /ARKA/. The number of Armenian officials prosecuted on corruption charges soared by almost 80% in 2018 as opposed to 2017, Armenia’s Prosecutor General Arthur Davtyan told reporters on Wednesday.
"All are equal before the law. Last year, the number of corruption cases was four times higher than in 2017. The number of criminal cases initiated over the same period increased 3.6 times compared to 2017," said Davtyan
According to him, in comparison with 2017, the number of citizens prosecuted on corruption charges also increased by 80%.
He said seven money laundering cases were initiated in 2018, while in 2017 no such cases were initiated at all. He said after the criminalization of illicit enrichment last year, criminal proceedings were instituted against five officials.
He said also that the total amount of damage caused to the state over the past year is 12 times higher than the same figure for 2017, and the total amount of the recovered damage has increased 15 times.
“The results are important also because they were due to an unprecedented public support, the initiative of the executive and its readiness to work,” said Davtyan.
According to him, this gives grounds to assume that society has become even more intolerant of corruption. -0-
