Yerevan Mayor Explains Causes of Seasonal Air Pollution
YEREVAN, December 1. /ARKA/. Yerevan's Mayor Tigran Avinyan has pointed out that the issue of air pollution in the city persists from mid-November through mid-March.
"Starting in 2024, we have initiated the implementation of an air quality monitoring system. Devices linked to the GIS system have been set up at all significant construction sites. Data collected from 175 devices indicates that air quality has been worsening since mid-November and is beginning to improve around mid-March," Avinyan remarked during a working meeting at City Hall on Monday.
He explained that the situation arises from several intricate factors—mainly Armenia's geographical position and climatic conditions, including air inversion, which allows pollutants to infiltrate the area and remain for extended periods.
Avinyan stressed that addressing this issue necessitates the execution of "a series of complex measures beyond Yerevan." He mentioned that in the long run, the establishment of roughly 100 hectares of new evergreen forests is being contemplated, which would act as a barrier against prevailing winds.
In the short term, the mayor believes that a targeted enhancement in air quality of about 20% could be realized within 10 days.
"In December, new regulations will be put in place mandating the installation of dust-proof nets at construction sites," Avinyan stated.-0-
