Yerevan Mayor Presents Progress of Work on Two New Metro Stations "Ajapnyak" and "Surmalu"

YEREVAN, September 15. /ARKA/. The design phase for the construction of the upcoming 11th station of the Yerevan Metro, named "Ajapnyak," has been finalized, as announced by the Mayor of the capital, Tigran Avinyan, during a press conference on Monday.
"The question arises as to why the process is taking so long. The fact is that over the past 35 years, we have not had such a complex project. In the near future, we will hold a tender in three stages. The first will concern the section from the 'Barekamutyun' metro station to the Hrazdan Gorge, the second - the bridge over the gorge, and the third - the construction of the tunnel and the station itself," Avinyan stated.
Regarding the "Surmalu" metro station, he mentioned that a feasibility study (FS) and a capital investment program are currently under development. Avinyan emphasized that both community funds and private investments are planned to be directed towards the project.
About the Yerevan Metro
The Yerevan Metro was established in 1981. Presently, there are 10 metro stations in Yerevan, with a total line length of 13.4 km.
About the Ajapnyak metro station
It was previously reported that the total estimated cost for the construction of the Ajapnyak metro station is approximately $50 million. The Armenian government allocated 750 million drams for the design work, while an additional 554 million drams were provided by the mayor's office of the capital. The design and estimate documentation for the station was prepared by the winning tender company, "Metrogiprotrans" (Russia). Avinyan had previously indicated that the developer for this station will be selected by the end of 2025, with construction set to commence in 2026.
About Surmalu Station
Currently, the precise location of the 12th Surmalu metro station remains uncertain. It is anticipated that it will be situated between the two existing metro stations, Sasuntsi David and Zoravar Andranik, thereby facilitating access to two shopping centers, Surmalu and Petak, as well as Sevan Street, which will offer an alternative mode of city transport. This development is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity.
Previously, the mayor indicated that the design phase for the construction of the Surmalu station will be funded by the community, with a budget of 400 million drams (approximately $1 million).-0-
