Yerevan municipality designs draft law to fine fare dodging passengers

YEREVAN, March 17. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Municipality will soon submit to the parliament a draft law designed to fine passengers who use public transport without paying for the ticket or using someone else's discount ticket.
"A legislative package has already been develope on granting supervisory functions to the Public Order Protection Service of the Mayor's Office," Yerevan Deputy Mayor Suren Grigoryan said on Monday.
He noted that the draft law is put up for public discussion, the two-week term of which expires next Monday (March 24).
According to the draft law, in case of using buses, trolleybuses or subway without paying for the ticket, a fine of 15 thousand drams, i.e. about $38 is envisaged. The use of a discount transportation ticket by another person (who does not have the right to preferential travel will result in a fine of 18 thousand drams, i.e. about $46.
The unified ticket system has been functioning in the capital Yerevan since February 1, 2025 removing cash payments for travel by buses, trolleybuses and subway. There are several payment options - paper tickets with QR code, TelCell Wallet mobile application, bank cards and permanent plastic passes.-0-
