YEREVAN, April 13. /ARKA/. Energy ministers of Armenia, Russia, Iran, and the deputy energy minister of Georgia have signed on Wednesday in Yerevan the "road map" for building the North-South Energy Corridor.

Armenia’s deputy energy minister Areg Galstyan said after the signing ceremony the "road map" formalizes the steps and the programs that will be implemented until 2019, when the energy corridor is supposed to be launched.

According to him, when the construction of power transmission lines between Armenia and Iran as well as Armenia and Georgia is over it will enable parallel operation of power systems of the four countries, as they  operated in Soviet times.

Areg Galstyan said the South-North Energy Corridor will be used primarily for seasonal electricity swaps through third countries. According to him, after the full launch of the corridor its capacity will reach about 1,000 MW.

He said with the Iranian funding Armenia and Iran are building a power transmission line. With the funding from German KfW bank another power transmission line is being built between Armenia and Georgia.

The meeting of energy ministers as well as the chief executive of a leading Russian electric utility in this format was held in the Armenian capital in late December 2015. The Armenian government said after that meeting that Armenia, Russia, Georgia and Iran would build a common energy market after the construction of two new power transmission lines connecting Armenia with Georgia and Iran. -0-
