YEREVAN, August 20. /ARKA/. The goal of the Armenian government's reforms in the energy sector is to ensure energy security and create a sustainable and competitive energy system by integrating the country into regional energy infrastructures and markets as part of the "Crossroads of Peace" initiative.

The plan is to diversify energy sources through the development of nuclear, gas, hydroelectric, solar, and other renewable energy capacities, including the using green hydrogen. This marks the beginning of Armenia's energy transformation.

Key priorities include:

Electricity market reform. Legislative and institutional reforms are planned to increase the sustainability of the energy sector, liberalize the market, and enhance competition.

Renewable energy development. By 2040, solar and wind power capacity is planned to reach 2,000 MW.

Creation of energy storage capacity. To increase the flexibility and resilience of the energy system, it is planned to provide at least 800 MW of capacity from modern energy storage stations by 2031.

Increased energy efficiency. Programs are envisaged to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency in the residential, industrial, and commercial sectors, including through improved construction and urban planning standards.

Extension of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP). The program for a second lifespan extension of the ANPP's second power unit is planned to be fully implemented for the period 2026–2036.

New nuclear power unit. The construction program for the new power unit will be launched. The technology selection for this unit is planned to be completed by at least the end of 2027.

Integration into regional energy grids. The modernization of internal grids is envisaged, expanding the capacity for import, export, domestic sales, and transit of electricity. The Iran-Armenia 400 kV double-circuit power transmission line and the Noravan 400/220/20 kV substation are scheduled to be commissioned. Construction of the Armenia-Georgia 400 kV power transmission line and the Ayrum and Ddmashen 400 kV substations is also expected to begin.

New Regional Energy Links. The government intends to stimulate dialogue and cooperation with Turkey and Azerbaijan, as well as countries in the wider region, to develop new energy links.-0-
