YEREVAN, December 23. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) has taken note of Armenian nuclear power plant’s investment program for 2016, worth 316 million drams (without VAT). PSRC said the bulk of the funds will be channeled into the replacement of the facility’s vehicles.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s but was closed following a devastating earthquake in 1988. One of its two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995.

Armenian authorities said they will build a new nuclear power plant to replace the aging facility. The new plant is supposed to operate at twice the capacity of the Soviet-constructed facility.  The plant currently generates some 40 percent of Armenia's electricity.

Under a Russian-Armenian agreement reached in February, Russia will provide Armenia with a $270 million loan and a $30 million grant to extend the service life of the nuclear power plant in Metsamor until 2026.

The loan will be given at a 3 percent annual interest rate with repayment to begin in January 2019. The loan will be used to repair the plant, replace equipment, prepare new documentation and train new personnel. ($ 1 - 478.97 drams). -- 0--
