Rosatom begins to inspect radioactive waste storage facility of the Armenian NPP
YEREVAN, September 16 /ARKA/. Rosatom (Russian state-run atomic cooperation) has begun inspecting the radioactive waste storage facility of the Armenian NPP, TASSnews agency reported with reference to the press service of the state corporation.
The work is carried out as part of preparations for extending the service life of power unit №2 of the plant.
The work is being carried out to assess the possibility of safe and reliable storage of radioactive waste at the site of the Armenian NPP as part of the repeated extension of the service life until 2036.
Rosatom Service, a division of Rosatom has begun an inspection of the complex of buildings and structures of the Armenian NPP. The first object of inspection within the framework of the program was the storage facility for solid low-level waste located at the site of the plant.
The storage facility contains solid radioactive waste generated during the operation of the nuclear power plant and accumulated since the plant was put into operation in 1980. As a result of the implementation of a set of necessary studies, relevant conclusions will be issued on the possibility and timing of further operation of the RAW storage facility.
About the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant
The Armenian NPP, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan. The plant is one of the main sources of electricity in the country, providing up to 40% of the total output. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to re-extend it for another 10 years.
The Government wants to build a new NPP within 8-10 years; currently various options are being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the USA, the South Korea is being studies. -0-
