YEREVAN, May 2. /ARKA/. Armenian Ucom telecom operator said in recent weeks its fixed and mobile network system have been operating under unprecedented overload, caused by the increase in demand for video content in the country.
The company said not only international channels are overloaded, but also the main routers and network equipment. It said its engineers at the technical department have been working in emergency mode to maximize the use of available network resources.
Ucom founder and CEO Hayk Yesayan said that Facebook and Youtube databases installed at the right time in Ucom's data centers provide modern requirements for video content.
The disproportionately sharp growth of Internet traffic began on April 13 and gradually increased, reaching a maximum of 260 gigabits per second on April 22 and 23. For comparison, the maximum Internet consumption did not exceed 80-90 gigabytes per second. Yesayan also noted that no network is prepared for such a dramatic growth of traffic.
"International experience shows that networks and routers are ready for a sharp increase in traffic by 20-30%, whereas recently Ucom’s traffic has grown by 300%," Yesayan said. He said Ucom continues to make efforts to ensure the normal operation of the network.
