Areni Wine Festival scheduled for October 1-5

The village of Areni in the southern province of Vayots Dzor will host the Sixth Wine Festival on October 1-5, said today Mekhak Apresyan, the head of an economy ministry's tourism department.
YEREVAN, September 26. / ARKA /. The village of Areni in the southern province of Vayots Dzor will host the Sixth Wine Festival on October 1-5, said today Mekhak Apresyan, the head of an economy ministry's tourism department.
Speaking at a news conference he said the goal of the festival is to stimulate development of rural tourism and to present Armenia’s rich wine-making culture and history.
He said this year the Wine Festival will extend to the nearby communities of Rind, Areni, Malishka, Yelpin and Yeghegnadzor, which will present the traditional tasting of local wines, various contest for visitors and theatrical performances.
Nune Manukyan, head of Areni Festival Fund, said the main event is scheduled for October 4 in the village of Areni. She said this year the festival will feature 27 types of wines from 15 wineries, not counting home-made wines.
The jury will comprise sommeliers from France, USA and Germany, who will also conduct workshops on presentation of Armenian wines.
The festival is a joint effort of Areni Festival Fund, the ministry of economy and Industry Development Fund. They are being assisted by the Union of the Armenian Communities, the administration of Vayots Dzor region and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The world's earliest known wine-making facility- a wine press and fermentation jars from about 6,000 years ago- has been discovered in a cave not far from the village of Areni. The same area was the site of the discovery of the oldest known leather shoe, dated to about 5,500 years ago. -0-
