YEREVAN, August 12. /ARKA/. Armenia's Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan told an extraordinary session of parliament today that the government has removed the ban on foreigners entering Armenia by air, but the ban on entry by land remains in force.

Avinyan is also head of a task force set up by the government to enforce the state of emergency declared to stop the spread of coronavirus. The extraordinary session of the parliament was convened to discuss the extension of the state of emergency for another month.

Avinyan said  the possibility of obtaining a visa at the border has been temporarily eliminated, and foreigners will be able to enter Armenia only with visas obtained in diplomatic missions or consulates. According to Avinyan, this decision aims to make the flow of passengers to Armenia more controlled and predictable.

Avinyan also said that persons arriving in Armenia will have to self-isolate for 14 days. However, if they test for coronavirus and the answer is negative, the self-isolation regime is canceled.

According to Avinyan, regardless of whether regular flights will be resumed d or charter flights will continue, passenger traffic to and from Armenia is expected to grow, therefore, the Civil Aviation Committee together with airlines is discussing setting a limit on the number of daily flights.

"During the first 10 days of August, about 4.5 thousand passengers arrived in Armenia through the Yerevan Zvartnots airport, 450 passengers a day. During the same period, the Shirak airport in Gyumri received about 500 people," said Avinyan.

Regarding the departure of Armenian citizens to other countries, the deputy prime minister said that everything depends on the restrictions adopted by the receiving side.

A 30-day state of emergency to curb the spread of coronavirus was declared in Armenia on March 16 and restrictions were imposed on free movement of citizens. The government banned also some types of economic activity. On April 13, the government extended the state of emergency for another month and on May 4 it lifted the ban on almost all types of economic activity and the free movement of citizens, except for public transport.

On May 14, the government again extended the state of emergency for another 30 days. However, despite the extension, public transport, preschools, trading centers, restaurants and gyms have reopened starting from May 18, and wearing of masks has become mandatory in public spaces.

On June 12, the government extended the state of emergency for another month- until July 13 and then again until August 13. On August 5 Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan said the state of emergency will be extended for another month until September 12.

As of today morning, Armenia has registered 40,794 confirmed coronavirus cases and 806 deaths. -0-
