YEREVAN, January 30. /ARKA/. Armenia’s customs officers prevented an attempt of illegal import of a batch of frozen poultry meat through the Bagratashen border checkpoint on the Armenian-Georgian border.
According to a press release of the Customs Service, a Russian businessman declared a batch of construction wallpapers, weighing 22.5 tons when crossing the Russian border into Georgia, however an X-ray examination at the Bagratashen border checkpoint revealed a breach of customs rules.
Customs officers could not fail to see that the ostensible wallpapers were placed in a refrigeration unit. Additional examination revealed that under the guise of construction wallpapers the businessman tried to import frozen poultry meat to Armenia.
The Customs Service noted that it is paying stronger attention to imports from the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), as some companies taking advantage of the liberalized import of goods from EEU member countries use different tricks to bypass customs controls at the border.
In 2016 and the first month of 2017 Armenian customs officers have revealed a total of 35 cases of breach of customs regulations. The unfair business people usually try to import to Armenia undeclared or incorrectly declared transit food and household products, cosmetics and auto parts, however, all such attempts have been prevented. -0-
