French Veolie Generale des Eaux to invest 80 billion drams in upgrading of Armenia’s water distribution system

The French company Veolie Generale des Eaux, chosen by the Armenian government as the single operator of the country’s water distribution networks, will invest 80 billion drams in the next 15 years in upgrading of the system, Arsen Harutyunyan, the head of the State Water Economy Committee, told representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), led by loan specialist Tia Melikadze, on November 1.

YEREVAN, November 2. /ARKA/. The French company Veolie Generale des Eaux, chosen by the Armenian government as the single operator of the country’s water distribution networks, will invest 80 billion drams in the next 15 years in upgrading of the system, Arsen Harutyunyan, the head of the State Water Economy Committee, told representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), led by loan specialist Tia Melikadze, on November 1.
Tia Melikadze was quoted by the State Water Economy Committee as saying in a press release that EBRD had invested 6.5 million euros in a program designed to improve water distribution networks of small communities implemented in 2012-2015.
She said the goal of that program was to improve water supply in Lori, Shirak, Kotayk, Syunik and Vayots Dzor regions, as well as construct sewage treatment plants in Dilijan and Jermuk. According to her, the successful implementation of that program has inspired hope that EBRD and the Armenian government will continue their cooperation.
From 1 January 2017 the new operator will be managing five water distribution companies - Yerevan Jur, the Armenian Water and Sewerage company, the Shirak Water and Sewage Company, the Lori Water and Sewage Company and Nor Akunk.
The tender for choosing a single operator was announced by the government on 15th January 2016. The priority was to be given to the company that would offer the lowest price for water. The current price for households in the capital city Yerevan is 170.256 drams per one cubic meter.
The pre-qualified companies were French operators Saur and Veolie Generale des Eaux, the Armenian-German consortium A&G Service and the Italian ACEA. Beginning from 1 January 2017 a single tariff for supply of drinking water and waste water removal will be applied across the country.
French Saur is running now the Armenian Water and Sewerage company, providing water services to seven regions of Armenia. Veolie Generale des Eaux is the operator of Yerevan-Jur, which is in charge of water supply in Yerevan and several adjacent communities. The A&G Service is the operator of water distribution system in Armavir, Shirak and Lori regions.
There are still 560 communities in the country which are not covered by any of the five Armenia-based water operators. -0 ($1 - 475.36 drams).
