Meghri border checkpoint will be modernized by Iranian company

YEREVAN, January 30, /ARKA/. Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (SRC) and Iranian Tana Energy Management Company signed last Friday 8.5 million euros ($20.3 million) worth agreement on modernization and expansion of Armenia’s border crossing with Iran.

The Iranian company is the winner of a tender announced by Armenia in 2021. The project is financed by the European Union and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) under an agreement signed by Armenian Finance Ministry and EBRD in 2020 February.

The project’s implementation was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The renovation of the border checkpoint is to be completed in 2026, Armenia’s State Revenue Committee said in a statement issued after the signing ceremony in Yerevan

According to the statement, the head of the SRC, Rustam Badasyan, thanked the EU and the EBRD for helping Armenia upgrade the checkpoint located near the southeastern town of Meghri.

Iran is one of Armenia’s major trading partner. According to Armenian government data, Armenian-Iranian trade soared by 44 percent, to $638.4 million, in January-November 2022. -0-
