Plastic bags, cups, and utensils will be banned in Armenia starting in 2027

YEREVAN, August 11. /ARKA/. The Armenian Market Inspectorate has announced that changes to the laws "On Trade and Services," "On Market Supervision," and the Code of Administrative Offenses concerning the use of single-use plastic products will take effect on January 1, 2027.

As per the new legislation, from January 1, 2027, the following items will be prohibited in retail stores, food service establishments, mobile vendors, fairs, trade exhibitions, and street vendors:

• the sale and presence of plastic bags and sacks;

• the sale and presence of disposable plastic or foam items such as containers, plates, cups, cup lids, spoons, forks, knives, drinking straws, and stirring sticks.

Additionally, the ban will extend to polyethylene bags and sacks that are thicker than 50 microns.

However, the law does allow for certain exceptions:

• polyethylene bags designed for bulk packaging;

• garbage bags made from recycled materials;

• plastic containers with lids meant for bulk packaging.

Under the Code of Administrative Offenses in Armenia, failing to comply with these new regulations will lead to administrative penalties.

The inspection authority urges business owners to take proactive steps to ensure their operations align with the upcoming legal requirements, effective January 1, 2027.
