YEREVAN, October 13, /ARKA/. Over 3.500 emergencies were reported to Armenian emergency ministry in January-June this year, according to latest government data, killing 182 people and injuring 2,600.
In the same time span some 1,700 man-made catastrophes killed 122 people and injured 1,100 These figures were unveiled by Ashot Petrosian, head of the National Center for Technical Safety as he spoke at the 8-th meeting of a CIS Interstate Council on Industrial Safety in Yerevan. The gathering has brought to the Armenian capital specialists from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova. Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. The meeting is chaired by Armenia.
He said the experience shows that the number of accidents and man-made catastrophes could be reduced radically given that economic and other entities comply with technical safety requirements.
He said heads of industrial enterprises and other organizations must control safety situation on a daily basis.
In his words, the Armenian National Center for Technical Safety is not vested with power to make entities comply with safety requirements and standards. It conducts only annual expertise of technical safety at facilities deemed dangerous for public health to reveal faults which have to be eliminated by enterprise and companies.
As an example of a successful operation, he said mobile liquefied gas stations were forced out of the city after a through inquiry by a special group set up by the emergency ministry. -0-
