The progress of the life extension program for Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) and the selection of a new nuclear power plant model were discussed in Vienna by RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi.
YEREVAN, September 15. /ARKA/. The progress of the life extension program for Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) and the selection of a new nuclear power plant model were discussed in Vienna by RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi.
As Khudatyan reported on Facebook, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference.
"With Rafael Grossi, we discussed ongoing and planned programs within the framework of industry cooperation with the IAEA," the minister wrote.
According to him, the parties, in particular, touched upon the progress of the life extension program for Unit 2 of the ANPP, as well as issues related to the selection of a new nuclear power plant model.
Khudatyan reported that during the meeting, he confirmed Grossi's invitation to visit Armenia to participate in events planned for COP17.
The meeting was also attended by Narek Apitonyan, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia; Andranik Hovhannisyan, Ambassador of Armenia to Austria; Eduard Martirosyan, Director General of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant CJSC; and other members of the Armenian delegation.
About the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, approximately 30 km west of Yerevan.
The plant is one of the country's main sources of electricity, providing up to 40% of its total output. Its service life has been extended until 2026, and work is underway to extend it for another 10 years.
The new nuclear power plant is planned to be built within 8-10 years. Various options are currently being compared and the experience of partners from Russia, the United States, France, and South Korea is being studied. The Armenian side is already reviewing a preliminary feasibility study developed by the Rosatom state corporation for the construction of a new 1,200 MW unit.
Earlier, Rosatom First Deputy Director General Kirill Komarov, responding to a question from the ARKA news agency, stated that the corporation could offer Armenia nuclear reactors with capacities ranging from 50 to 1,000 MW. He added that it is possible, in particular, to assemble a reactor of any capacity from 50 MW units.
