Mercury levels exceeding the permissible limits have been detected in drinking water in the village of Tsav, Syunik Province, the Armenian Ministry of Health reports.
YEREVAN, September 14. /ARKA/. Mercury levels exceeding the permissible limits have been detected in drinking water in the village of Tsav, Syunik Province, the Armenian Ministry of Health reports.
The inspection was prompted by a local resident who reported a metallic mass in his tap water to specialists at the Syunik branch of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Laboratory testing of a sample taken from the house revealed elevated mercury levels.
The Ministry of Health noted that given the high level and the absence of similar deviations in previous chemical tests, specialists re-sampled water at four locations, including the water source and residents' taps. The results obtained on September 11 confirmed the initial findings.
The relevant government agencies have been notified of the situation. Until the water quality is restored, residents of Tsav have been urged not to use it for drinking or domestic purposes. However, no signs of deteriorating health have been reported among the population. Specialists intend to conduct door-to-door visits as a preventative measure.
The government and local authorities are organizing the supply of safe water to residents until the problem is resolved. Meanwhile, the causes of the contamination are being investigated.
