YEREVAN, April 1. /ARKA/. Armenia's government will allocate AMD 18 million for plugging illegal down wells, Aramais Grigoryan, Armenian environment minister, said Thursday at a regular Cabinet session.
He said down wells will be plugged in Ararat and Armavir provinces, where down wells were illegally used for fish-breeding businesses.
The ministry has already plugged 40 wells, he said. In his words, AMD 1.5 to 1.75 million is spent for plugging one well.
The study conducted by USAID in 2013 and 2014 showed that the area of underground artesian water shrank three times over a period between 1983 and 2013 to 10,706 hectares.
As a result, 31 villages were left absolutely without irrigation water from underground sources or had their irrigation water significantly reduced.
Artesian water intake area has grown from 34.7 cubic meters sec in 1983 to 80 cubic meters sec in 2014 mainly because of development of fish-breeding farms in Ararat province. ($1 – AMD 480.79). ---0---
