Russia and Armenia signed a protocol on making changes and amendments in mutual agreement on prolongation of Russian military base in Gyumri as of 1995.
YEREVAN, August 19. /ARKA/. Russia and Armenia signed a protocol on making changes and amendments in mutual agreement on prolongation of Russian military base in Gyumri as of 1995.
Operation date of the agreement of 1995 was 25 years. Now the document will operate 49 years (starting from 1995).
Armenian Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan and Russian Minister of Defense Anatoli Serdyukov signed the document.
The document was signed in the result of negotiations of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. Medvedev is in Armenia with official visit.
In 1995, 102nd Russian military base was established in Gyumri which is located in the north of Armenia. The base is under subordination of the group of Russian troops in Transcaucasia of North-Caucasian military district of Russian federation.
The base has anti-aircraft rockets С-300 and fighter MiG G-29. The number of personal staff of the base is about 5 thousand people.
As the Russian military base except implementing functions of protection of interests of Russia, jointly with Armenian Military Forces provides also safety of Armenia, the Russian side, in accordance with the agreement, is obliged to provide the Armenian side with modern and adequate armament. -0-
