Armenian president asks parliament to declare general amnesty

Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan has formally asked today the National Assembly (parliament) to declare a general amnesty, Sargsyan’s press office told ARKA.
YEREVAN, May 20, /ARKA/. Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan has formally asked today the National Assembly (parliament) to declare a general amnesty, Sargsyan’s press office told ARKA. In a short statement, the press office said the amnesty will be announced in connection with the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence to be celebrated in September. The statement did not say which prisoners will be eligible for early release.
Armenian media has been rife with speculation that six of many oppositionists, arrested in connection with 2008 March 1-2 post-election unrest, and kept still behind bars, would be set free on May 28 when Armenia celebrates First Republic Day.
In 2009 the National Assembly declared an amnesty resulting in the liberation of hundreds of convicts, including dozens of allies and supporters of opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosian who were imprisoned following the 2008 post-election unrest in Yerevan. -0-
