YEREVAN, May 13. /ARKA/. Forty-five thousand tons of cargo, including from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan, have already been transported to Armenia via Azerbaijan, according to Oleg Shatalov, First Deputy General Director of the South Caucasus Railway.

"The route is attractive; we are receiving more and more applications. We have set the goal of increasing cargo transportation to approximately 100,000 tons," he said during an expanded meeting of the Council of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Armenia (UIEA).

Shatalov also expressed hope that the route will attract more companies and a wider range of cargo in the future.

On the supply of goods to Armenia via Azerbaijan

Railway transportation of goods to Armenia via Azerbaijan became possible thanks to agreements reached between the two countries in Washington on August 8, 2025, as well as memoranda of understanding signed between the governments of the United States and Armenia. This route is being used for the first time since the early 1990s, following the announcement on October 21, 2025, by the President of Azerbaijan that all restrictions on cargo transit to Armenia through its territory would be lifted.

The first shipments of goods by rail through Georgia and Azerbaijan arrived in Armenia on November 5 and November 7, 2025: 15 railcars carrying Russian grain and approximately 1,000 tons of Kazakh wheat.

On December 19, 2025, a train carrying 1,218 tons of gasoline from Azerbaijan arrived in Armenia, in accordance with the agreements reached between the Armenian and Azerbaijani deputy prime ministers at a meeting on November 28, 2025, in Gabala.
