Armenian presidential election was held in line with international standards, Marie Anne Isler Beguin, the head of European Parliament’s delegation, said on Wednesday in Yerevan.
YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. Armenian presidential election was held in line with international standards, Marie Anne Isler Beguin, the head of European Parliament’s delegation, said on Wednesday in Yerevan.
She said presenting interim report of European observers on Armenian presidential elections that the presidential election was assessed as having demonstrated progress – it was organized better than previous elections and procedural matters were improved.
Nevertheless, Beguin pointed out that certain faults were noticed.
She said that the delegation put it on record that, as a whole, the vote was up to international standards, but there were some difficulties in counting votes.
She also said that European observers noticed some atmosphere of tension.
Beguin said the European Parliament is interested in deepening democracy.
According to the Central Electoral Commission, on Wednesday noon after re-processing 100% of ballot papers, RA Prime Minister Serge Sargsian took 863,544 votes (52.86%) and Armenia’s first President Levon Ter-Petrosian won 351,306 votes (21.5%). Orinats Yerkir Party Leader Arthur Baghdasarian trailed on 11.666% (272,256). 100,876 people (6.12%) voted for ARF-D (Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun).
14,000 observers from 39 local and six international organizations observed the February 19 presidential election in Armenia.-0-
