YEREVAN, January 23. / ARKA /. Armenia is ready to do everything possible to help restore the operation of the Abkhazian railway as soon as possible, Armenian foreign minister Edward Nalbandian said today.
In late 2012 October Georgian reintegration minister Paata Zakareishvili said the Georgian government was willing to restore the railway communication with Russia via its breakaway region of Abkhazia as part of a strategy ‘ to end Abkhazia’s isolation.’ The railway is very important for Armenia being the shortest and cheapest way to Russia.
Nalbandian said today that during his first visit to Armenia earlier this month Georgia’s prime minister Bidzina Ivanishvili also said his government was ready to work on this issue. He said Armenia is extremely interested in the resumption of the Abkhazian railway.
However, Georgia’s president Mikheil Saakashvili condemned Ivanishvili’s statement made in Yerevan for pledging to help reactivate the railway connecting his country as well as neighboring Armenia to Russia.
Saakashvili argued that reactivation of the Abkhazian railway could be discussed only after the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity and ending Russian occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. -0-
