YEREVAN, October 24. / ARKA /. Armenian parliament is discussing a government-submitted bill on senior officials’ salaries. During a heated debate many of the lawmakers demanded that their salary be raised to the level of ministerial salaries.
David Harutyunyan from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia described the document as political saying it shows what kind of roles senior government officials are to play. He said the salaries of government officials are not consistent with market salaries.
Stepan Margaryan from the Prosperous Armenia party said a parliament member’s place on the hierarchical ladder should not be below that of a cabinet minister.
He argued that by equalizing the salaries of parliament members with those of senior government officials the government would express its true attitude to the National Assembly.
Margaryan said that the post of parliament speaker is higher than the position of prime minister, because, according to the constitution, the speaker replaces the president in his/her absence. -0-
