YEREVAN, December 10. /ARKA/. Presidential elections are scheduled in Armenia for February 18, 2013, chairman of the country’s Central Electoral Commission Tigran Mukuchyan reported.

According to article 51 of the Armenian constitution, presidential elections are to be held 50 days before the end of the current president’s term, he said.

At the same time, under article 96 of the Electoral Code the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission has to announce the election day not later that 70 days before the vote.

“Having in mind the above articles, 18 of February 2012 is announced as election day,” Mukuchyan said.

The forthcoming elections are the sixth one in independent Armenia. The first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan was elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1996, but had to leave the post in 1998 due to disputes with other leaders of the country on the Karabakh peace process.
The second president Robert Kocharyan ruled over Armenia in 1998-2008. The current president Serzh Sargsyan was elected on February 19, 2008.

According to Armenia’s constitution, anyone aged 35 and more who has had Armenian citizenship for the last ten years, who has lived permanently in Armenia for the last ten years and who has the right to vote, can be elected as president. Yet, no president is allowed to run for a third consecutive term. -0-
