YEREVAN, December 2. /ARKA/. The European Union will invest $500 million in Armenia's energy sector to strengthen security and diversification, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced at a briefing for Armenian journalists in Brussels.

Recently, a document was signed in Tashkent on assistance to Armenia as part of the "Caucasus Energy System" project, aimed at improving energy infrastructure, strengthening energy security and diversification, and reducing dependence on external players. The EU is cooperating with the German development bank KfW on this project, Armenpress reports.

"These $500 million investments are aimed at connecting your (Armenian - ed.) energy system with the Georgian one. Work is already underway on the Armenia-Turkey connection. The goal is to make you increasingly less dependent on Russian energy," Kos stated.

She added that she had asked Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, David Khudatyan, to present a list of priority programs in the context of ensuring overall interconnectivity.

The goal of the Caucasus Energy System project is to ensure reliable, flexible, and mutually beneficial cross-border energy exchange in the South Caucasus by synchronizing the power systems of Armenia and Georgia.
