Majority of Russians aware of Armenian genocide and Holocaust

The number of Russian citizens who know about the Armenian genocide has grown in recent years to 62% from 50% in 2007, Interfax news agency reported citing the findings of a survey conducted by Levada-Center polling center.
YEREVAN, June 15. / ARKA /. The number of Russian citizens who know about the Armenian genocide has grown in recent years to 62% from 50% in 2007, Interfax news agency reported citing the findings of a survey conducted by Levada-Center polling center.
Of those who are aware of this fact, 51% said Turkey purposefully exterminated the Armenian nation in 1914-1923, while 11% said that stories about the Armenian genocide are exaggerated.
Some 22% of respondents said they never heard anything about the Armenian genocide and another 17% could not answer this question. The survey conducted May 22-25 involved 800 people in 134 settlements of 46 Russian provinces.
The survey also found that some 80% of Russians knew about the Holocaust. The figure was up from 75% in 2007. Of these, 74% believe that Jews were purposefully exterminated in Germany and in the occupied territories prior to and during World War II. Some 6% regarded the stories about it exaggerated.
Also some 8% of Russians never heard about the Holocaust and 12% could not answer this question.
The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the twentieth century.
According to Armenian and many other historians, up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed starting in 1915 in a systematic campaign by the government of Turkey. Turkey has been denying it for decades.
The Armenian Genocide was recognized by tens of countries. The first was Uruguay that did so in 1965. Other nations are Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Venezuela, Argentina, 43 U.S. states.
