YEREVAN, February 23. /ARKA/. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan noted today with satisfaction the significant progress made recently in the relations between Armenia and the European Union, which he said is reflected not only in bilateral cooperation, but also within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Program, as he received the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaar.
Sargsyan was quoted by his press service as saying that in the context of these relations, the beginning of 2018 is a period of important achievements considering that only two days earlier Armenia and the EU signed in Brussels a document on the implementation of the priorities stemming from the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) Armenia and EU signed last November.
Sargsyan noted Armenia’s commitment to developing relations in the same spirit and implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement in a short time. To this end, according to the president, an inter-agency commission was established headed by vice-premiere to ensure the coordination of all related events.
Sargsyan also noted that Armenia is likely to ratify the CEPA before the end of April - before it is ratified by the EU member states. He said this will enable Armenia to start its interim implementation.
The President also expressed satisfaction that Toivo Klaar's home country – Estonia - has already completed the process of CEPA ratification, and also expressed hope that other EU countries will follow suit in the foreseeable future.
Toivo Klaar noted that Armenia-EU relations are developing well. Speaking about the ratification of the Agreement, he said that in some European countries this process requires a certain amount of time, which, however, does not prevent Armenia and the EU from moving forward towards its temporary implementation.
Claar stressed that Armenia is a very good example of how a country that is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, may enjoy good relations with the European Union.
The two men were said to have exchanged thoughts on the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. Klaar confirmed EU's assistance to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
Armenia and the EU had been supposed to sign the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) at a 2013 November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius but on September 3 Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan announced that the country was going to become part of the Russian-led Customs Union.
On December 7, 2015 Armenia and the EU launched talks on a new framework agreement after EU Foreign Affairs Council authorized earlier the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new legal basis for relations with Armenia. -0--
