Tigran Sargsyan appointed prime minister

President Serzh Sargsyan has signed a decree today to re-appoint acting prime minister Tigran Sargsyan to his post, the presidential press service reported. Earlier Tigran Sargsyan’s candidacy was endorsed by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. President Serzh Sargsyan has signed a decree today to re-appoint acting prime minister Tigran Sargsyan to his post, the presidential press service reported. Earlier Tigran Sargsyan’s candidacy was endorsed by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.

Under Armenian Constitution, reelected president Serzh Sargsyan was sworn in on April 9th and accepted the resignation of the government on the same day. According to the basic law of the country, the president appoints a new premier based on distribution of parliament seats and consultations with parliament factions, within 10 days after accepting the resignation of the government. The new cabinet is formed within 20 days after the appointment of the premier.

Tigran Sargsyan has been the prime-minister of Armenia since April 9, 2008. He was born on January 29, 1960 in Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) in Armenia. In 1978-1980, he studied at the Institute of National Economy in Yerevan. In 1983 Sargsyan graduated from Financial-Economic Institute after N. A. Voznesensky in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg, Russia) with honors. In 1987 he earned a degreed in economy from the same Institute.

Sargsyan was a senior research worker and headed the international economic ties unit at R&D Institute of Economy and Planning in 1987-1990. Sargsyan chaired the National Council of Young Specialists and Scientists in 1988-1993 and coordinated economic reform seminars for banking specialists in 1990-1991.

In 1990-1995 he was Member of Parliament and head of parliament commission on financial-crediting and fiscal affairs. In 1995-1998, Sargsyan chaired the Armenian Bankers' Association and headed the Transition Society Institute in 1995-2008. In 1998 – 2008 he was the chairman of Armenia’s Central Bank.-0-
