Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan released a decree on appointing Tigran Sargsyan as a Prime Minister of Armenia, the government’s press service reported on Saturday.
YEREVAN, June 4. /ARKA/. Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan released a decree on appointing Tigran Sargsyan as a Prime Minister of Armenia, the government’s press service reported on Saturday.
Sargsyan’s candidacy was unanimously supported at the sessions of the Executive Body and the Council of the Republican Party of Armenia.
On May 31, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan accepted the Cabinet’s resignation.
According to the Constitution of Armenia, the President appoints a new Prime Minister within ten days after approving the government’s resignation. The new government is formed within twenty days after the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
Tigran Sargsyan was born in Kirovakan (currently Vanadzor) in 1960. He graduated from Yerevan National Institute of Economy ( currently Armenian State University of Economics), Leningrad Financial and Economic Institute after N.A. Voznesensky, and received his postgraduate degree from the same university. He continued his education in the United States.
Throughout 1987-1990 Sargsyan was holding the positions of the senior fellow at Research Institute of Economy and Planning, the international economic ties team coordinator, as well as the head of Republican Council of Young Specialists and Scientists.
Within 1990-1995 he was a deputy of Supreme Council of Armenia and chief of the regular commission for financial, credit and budget issues. In 1995-1998 Sargsyan chaired the Association of Banks of Armenia, and in 1995-2008- Institute for the Study of the transition society.
Throughout 1998-2008 Sargsyan headed the Central Bank of Armenia, and was appointed a Prime Minister of the country on April 9, 2008.
He was awarded Anania Shirakatsi medal and has the rank of reserve officer; he is an author of over 20 research articles, Honorable Doctor of Economic University, the Republican Party member.
The Republican Party of Armenia won the majority of votes, receiving 44.02% (664, 440 votes). The Prosperous Armenia Party received 30,12% of votes (454, 673 votes) and 37 seats (28 under proportional, and 9- popular vote) in 131-seat parliament The third place was given to opposition block Armenian National Congress- 7.08% (106, 903).
Five-percent barrier was overcome by oppositional Heritage (5.76% or 86, 998 votes) and Dashnaktsutyun (5.67% or 85, 550) as well as coalition Otinats Yerkir – 5.51% or 83, 123 votes.--0--
