As of July 1, 2017, Armenia’s population has dwindled by another 15,200 from the year before to 2, 979,900 people, the National Statistical Service (NSS) said today.

YEREVAN, July 31. / ARKA /. As of July 1, 2017, Armenia’s population has dwindled by another 15,200 from the year before to 2, 979,900 people, the National Statistical Service (NSS) said today. Compared with January 1, 2017, the population decreased by 6,200 people, it said. 

According to official numbers, the urban population declined by 7,700 year-on-year to 1,898,000 people. The capital city Yerevan had a 1,075,100 population. In rural areas, the population decreased by 7,500 people to 1,081,900 people.

In January-June 2017, some 17,169 babies were born in the country, by 6.6% down when compared to the first seven months of 2016. Also 14,709 people were reported to have died, an increase of 2.1% when compared to the same time span of 2016.

It should be noted that as of January 1, 2016, the population of Armenia for the first time since the 70s was less than 3 million people.

Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan, speaking at the first meeting of the newly elected parliament, said that the population of the country should reach 4 million by 2040 due to a sharp improvement in the demographic situation. -0-
