Armenia simplifies procedure for obtaining citizenship
YEREVAN, October 25. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia has passed today in the second and final reading a legislative initiative proposed by Rustam Bakoyan, a deputy from the ruling Civil Contract faction, on simplifying the procedure of obtaining Armenian citizenship.
According to the bill, not only children whose parents are citizens of Armenia, but also parents whose children are citizens of Armenia are eligible to obtain Armenian citizenship.
Also, adult foreign nationals will be eligible to apply for citizenship if one of their parents has Armenian citizenship.
Under the current law a foreign national can apply for Armenian citizenship if one of his/her parents was born on the territory of Armenia or has Armenian citizenship and obtain citizenship within three years from the date of majority.
The bill proposes to replace this paragraph and establish that permanent residence in the territory of the country for one year is a basis for obtaining citizenship. --0--
