Yerevan City Council initiates investigation into the alienation of school and kindergarten buildings over the past 35 years

YEREVAN, June 24. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Council of Elders has decided to establish an investigative commission to look into the alienation of school and kindergarten buildings that previously belonged to the city between September 1991, and 2025.
The rationale for the decision, adopted on Tuesday at a regular meeting of the Council, notes that in 1996-2018, the alienation of buildings of a number of preschool, educational, and cultural institutions under the jurisdiction of the community has repeatedly been the subject of public debate, criticism, and concern.
"The investigative commission plans to conduct a detailed study to establish the facts, assess the validity of these processes, and inform the public.
The city administration believes that the six-month activity of the investigative commission will contribute to strengthening transparency, fairness, and public accountability in the processes of managing Yerevan's communal property.
As Mayor Tigran Avinyan noted, 48 kindergartens had been privatized in Yerevan between 1998 and 2018.
Meanwhile, opposition factions in the Council of Elders said that this issue had been politicized, calling the the decision an “election show,” demagoguery, and populism. -0-
