YEREVAN, September 14. /ARKA/. The Armenian government today refused to endorse a proposal motioned by the parliamentary opposition to free importers and sellers of medications from payment of VAT.
"This initiative was proposed with a view to lowering the price of medicines, which we think is inexpedient, because VAT will be applied to imported medicines in one way or another. Therefore, this may cause a discrepancy in the market and will not in any way prompt the decline in the prices of medicines," deputy finance minister Atom Janjugazyan said.
According to him, the same companies buy medicines from local producers as well with VAT already included in the price. ‘Therefore, it is included in the prime price of the medicine. It's not certain that in this case, exempting sale of medicines from VAT will help lower the prices of medicines," added Janjugazyan. -0-
