YEREVAN, August 28. /ARKA/. Armenian health minister Derenik Dumanyan ordered his subordinates to examine reports about illegal extortion of money in maternity hospitals, the press service of the ministry said.

"Every year the government releases more than six billion drams as part of a government childbirth certificates program, but this important initiative of the president, designed to stimulate the birth rate, is overshadowed by illegal extortion of money in our hospitals," Dumanian was quoted as saying at a meeting with high-ranking ministry officials.

Dumanian instructed the ministry’s experts to find out what are other paid services in maternity hospitals. In particular, he ordered to find out why many women refuse to stay in free wards, preferring paid ones in the same hospitals. The minister also asked experts to compile a list of mandatory free childbirth services.

The national childbirth certificates introduced in Armenia from July 1, 2008 is a guaranteed government document giving the right to free medical aid during pregnancy period and free child delivery at hospitals. -0-
