As of August 2 of this year, a total of 82.64 million cubic meters of water were withdrawn from Armenia's largest Lake of Sevan for irrigation purposes, which is by 45 million cubic meters less than the volume of water withdrawn from the lake in the same time span of 2018, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.
YEREVAN, August 8. /ARKA/.
"The amount of water release from the lake set by law is 170 million cubic meters a year. I hope that this year we will not be forced to make additional releases from Sevan," he wrote in a Facebook post. Pashinyan added that this hope is inspired by the weather and the improved water management efforts.
"It will be much better if we manage to make water withdrawal less than the amount set by the law," he said. According to the prime minister, the level of Sevan is 4 cm higher today from the year before.
On June 6, the government approved the release of 170 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes. The water is to be used to irrigate 32 thousand hectares of land in Armavir, Ararat, Kotayk and Aragatsotn regions.
Lake Sevan is the largest body of water in Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is situated in Gegharkunik province at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level. Its’ basin’s total surface area is about 5,000 km2, which makes up 1⁄6 of Armenia's territory. The lake itself is 1,242 km2. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. Sevan has significant economic, cultural, and recreational value. Its only island (now a peninsula) is home to a medieval monastery. -0-
