Russia to help Armenia strengthen food security
YEREVAN, March 16. /ARKA/. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations with funding from Russia will provide assistance to Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for strengthening of their food security, FAO representative in Armenia Raymund Yele told journalists on Thursday.

He said the program will start soon. ‘We are currently hiring specialists. The $6 million budget of the program is designed for three years," Yele said.

According to him, the program has an applied value - the organization of school meals. In particular, the program stipulates that local producers will supply schools with food.  It calls for exchange of experience in the field of food security, development of policies, planning and creation of projects to ensure food security and nutrition.

Since 2010, Russia has transferred more than $25 million to Armenia under the school feeding program. Assistance will continue until the Armenian government can fully assume this obligation. The School Nutrition program has been implemented in Armenia since 2010 in cooperation with the World Food Program (WFP) and the government of Armenia.

As part of the program, more than 83,000 schoolchildren from ten regions of Armenia are provided with school meals. In Ararat, Vayots Dzor and Syunik regions, the program is implemented with the state budget. In 2016, it included Tavush region as well. -0-
