YEREVAN, September 5. /ARKA/. Forty-six cases of methanol poisoning have been registered by Armenian health authorities from August 31 to September 5, the health ministry reported today, saying also that the number of people killed by bootleg vodka has grown by three more to 17.
The bulk of the cases- 29- were reported in the Armavir region (9 with fatal outcome), 15 - in Yerevan (7 - with fatal outcome), 2 - in the Kotayk region (1 - with fatal outcome).
According to the ministry, 13 patients are being treated now for alcohol poisoning in various medical institutions of the country. They have neurological symptoms -nausea, blurred consciousness, dizziness. Three patients went blind. All these symptoms are inherent in methanol poisoning, it said.
Doctors assess the condition of only one patient as satisfactory, the rest remain in a serious and extremely serious condition.
The ministry called on citizens to avoid drinking non-factory-made drinks, alcoholic drinks of unknown origin, as well as home-made vodka.
Armenia's Food Safety Inspectorate said earlier this week after examining samples of the bootleg vodka that had killed 14 people that it contained huge volume of methyl alcohol.
"The examination confirmed the preliminary version that the people were poisoned by methyl alcohol in the home-made vodka, the percentage of which was many times higher than the maximum allowable amount approved by the Eurasian Economic Commission," the Food Safety Inspectorate said.
The Investigative Committee has detained Ashot Hovsepyan, a resident of Armavir, born in 1970, on suspicion of producing and selling the vodka. Later, the police said they found 200 liters of vodka of unknown origin in the man's house. -0-
