YEREVAN, April 28. /ARKA/. The long-awaited tender for new buses has already been announced, Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan reported Wednesday on his Facebook page. “After temporary difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we have finally announced a tender for buses,” he wrote on his page.
Marutyan said that the tender for 100 buses announced by the Yerevan municipality was published on the official page of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
“In accordance with the tender, we plan to purchase 100 twelve-meter long buses, with a natural gas engine and low platform, convenient for people with disabilities. Their best international criteria are developed in detail and presented in a tender package,” the mayor said.
Marutyan also added that the tender will be open until June 12th.
Background
In December 2019, Hayk Marutyan reported that the Yerevan municipality is negotiating with the largest international banks in order to obtain a loan for the introduction of a new transport network in the capital. We are talking about the amount from $ 120 million to $ 250 million, the interest rate has not yet been determined.
For his part, Hakob Karapetyan, spokesman for the municipality, said that 850 buses are needed for the introduction of the new transport system, the first batch of which will arrive in Yerevan in 2020.
It was previously noted that this year about 400 minibuses will be discontinued due to the expiration of their service life (15 years). The whole city is served by 900 minibuses.
Room for introducing an integrated transport network with a flexible system of prices and tickets is being considered now. In particular, instead of the current 111 bus routes, 42 will be offered, and the number of vehicles will be significantly cut. A total of 845 buses and 101 trolleybuses will operate, and 15% of all buses will be transferred to the reserve.
In 2014, the Municipality of Yerevan invited the international company WYG International Limited to study the transport system of the city and develop a project for its modernization. An initial reform project was submitted in September 2017. The new network envisaged a halving of the number of vehicles. According to preliminary calculations, its implementation is estimated to cost approximately $ 100 million and take 2 to 4 years. -0---
