YEREVAN, May 23 /ARKA/. The rector of Yerevan State University (YSU)Aram Simonyan has resigned today, YSU spokesman Gevorg Emin-Teryan wrote on his Facebook page. He said an official statement will be made in 20 minutes.
On February 28, 2019, the university’s Board of Trustees failed to include the issue of resignation of the rector on the meeting’s agenda with only 12 members of the board voting for, while 13 voted against it.
Last December, the State Oversight Service (SOS), a government body subordinate to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and the Police alleged that the YSU administration was involved in serious financial irregularities and other corrupt practices. They asked another law-enforcement body to launch an investigation.
Simonyan ran Armenia’s oldest and largest university since 2006. He denied the allegations saying he would not step down before 2020 when his term in office ends. -0-
