Yerevan Zoo area to be expanded to 34 hectares

YEREVAN, December 25. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Zoo will be expanded from the current 29 hectares to 34, the head of the Nature Protection Department at Yerevan Municipality Sirarpi Haykazyan said at a working meeting on Monday, presenting a 3D version of the park expansion project.
According to her, the expansion will allow creating two water reservoirs and getting a new elephant.
'The thing is that elephants cannot live alone. That is why we need a second elephant. The current enclosure does not allow us to get a second elephant. We also can't get new species of animals through exchange and donations because the conditions don't allow it," Aykazyan said.
She also said that two new entrances to the zoo will be asphalted - from Gyurjyan Street (now the only entrance for visitors and employees is on Myasnikyan Avenue).
"One of the additional entrances from the side of Nor Nork neighborhood will become a service entrance. Quarantine buildings and warehouses will be located there," Haikazyan said.
According to her, a ropeway will be launched on the territory of the zoo.
Yerevan Zoo is home to more than 150 species of animals and birds, including some species listed in the Red Book. Every year 100-120 thousand people visit the zoo. --0--
