YEREVAN, June 21. /ARKA/. US Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills has reconfirmed today his earlier statement that U.S. companies are interested in investing in Armenia’s energy sector. The ambassador has also repeated that Armenia has great potential for the development of renewable energy, saying there are prospects for investing USD 8 billion in this field.
Speaking to local reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Yerevan on Armenia’s competitiveness, the ambassador said this figure was first announced by the Armenian Ministry of Energy Infrastructure and Natural Resources, but he added that the assessments of the US Embassy in Armenia also confirmed the availability of such a potential.
He said the investments can be implemented when Armenia’s electricity market would be completely free and able to export electricity to Georgia, Iran and further to the south. The ambassador added that the possibility of exporting electricity to Turkey would also create real investment opportunities.
According to him, such a potential will be realized when appropriate infrastructure is built, electric power transmission systems are created to swap electricity with Georgia. -0-...
