Armenia to Receive $1.7 Million Grant from Japan to Modernize Air Monitoring System
YEREVAN, December 25. /ARKA/. During a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government sanctioned a grant agreement worth $1.7 million with Japan for "Economic and Social Development" aimed at upgrading the air monitoring system.
The agreement for "Economic and Social Development" was formalized on September 30, 2025, in Yerevan, with Armenian Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan and Japanese Ambassador to Armenia Aoki Yutaka signing it.
The government has stated that Armenia's existing air pollution monitoring system fails to meet contemporary standards regarding both the technologies employed and the parameters being tracked.
The Japanese grant will supply automatic monitoring equipment for essential air pollutants—sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone, and suspended particles (PM10 and PM2.5)—which will be set up in three administrative districts of Yerevan. This initiative will facilitate the collection of more detailed air pollution data, which will be accessible to the public in real time.
The approval of this agreement will allow the Republic of Armenia to enhance its air quality monitoring system, improve data quality control and assurance capabilities, and aid in tackling environmental challenges within the country. -0-
