YEREVAN, January 17. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia has approved today a direct contract with Armpower and RENCO companies as part of a framework agreement on the construction of a new thermal power plant in Yerevan worth $250 million.
Armenia’s acting Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan said the new gas and steam power generating plant with 250 MW capacity will be built next to another gas-fired thermal power plant that was built in Yerevan in 2010 with a $247 million loan provided by Japan’s government. Its capacity is 242 megawatts.
The construction of the new plant is scheduled to start in a couple of months. According to acting Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Garegin Baghramyan, the Italian company agreed to cut its electricity tariff from 6.02 US cents per one KWh to 5.7 cents. He said the cut will allow Armenia to save $160 million in energy expenses over the next 25 years.
According to him, the construction will last 26 months and will involve 1000-1,200 people.
The ground-breaking ceremony fore the construction of the state-owned facility was held on March 20, 2017 and was attended by then president Serzh Sargsyan and other senior Armenian officials. Renco’s chief executive, Giovanni Rubini, and Italy’s ambassador to Armenia, Giovanni Ricciulli, were also in attendance.
The construction of the third Armenia-Iran power transmission line (400 kV) and of a new Armenia-Georgia power line (400 kV) are expected to be over later this year. Together with the construction of the new thermal power plant in Yerevan they will ensure the reliability and continuity of electricity supplies to Armenia’s neighbor countries and will allow it to become an important player of the regional electricity market. --0--
