YEREVAN, October 31. /ARKA/. Armenia needs some 5,000 anti-hail stations, emergency situations minister Armen Yeritsyan told today a parliamentary hearing on the draft 2017 budget.
According to him, Armenia has now 496 such stations, which cover only 9% of the territory of the country. The number of radar stations –only two- is not enough either, according to him. He said that Russia will donate two radars (the cost of each of them - $ 1.5 million.).
Meanwhile, some experts believe that anti-hail stations are ineffective, proposing instead to use hail nets. Every year Armenia's economy suffers huge losses due to the damage caused by hails to crops.
The minister said also that his agency needs $36 million to buy special machines and equipment to clean roads in some 190 high-mountain communities, where roads are closed for 10-15 days in winter.
The draft 2017 budget earmarks 11.2 billion drams for the ministry and more than 10 billion of that amounts will be paid as salaries. ($ 1 0 475.34 drams). -0-
